| Dougherty County, Georgia was created December 15, 1853 from Baker County as Georgia's
103rd county. Portions of Worth County were later added to Dougherty County in 1854 and 1856. The county
was named for Charles Dougherty, an Athens judge who strongly favored states' rights in the mid-1800s.
The county seat is Albany, which was incorporated on December 27, 1838. Founded by Nelson Tift. Communities include: Acree, Pecan City, Pretoria, and Putney. [More Dougherty County History] |
