PINKNEY JACKSON7 ADAMSON (JOHN COATES6, GREENBERRY5, BASIL4, JOHN BALDWIN3, ALEXANDER2, ARCHBALD1) was born May 22, 1840 in Tallapossa Co., AL, and died February 15, 1915 in Preston, Kemper Co., MS. He married MARTHA REBECKA WOOD December 15, 1866 in Chambers Co., AL, daughter of J. WOOD and EMILY COATES. She was born April 1849 in Alabama, and died Aft. July 1900. Notes for PINKNEY JACKSON ADAMSON: Pinkney Jackson Adamson was a member of Company E (Loomis Battery) of 1st Alabama Artillery Battalion, CSA. This command was organized at Fort Morgan, Alabama in February, 1861, recruiting at Mobile, Montgomery, Selma and Eufaula, as part of the "Army of Alabama" and entered Confederate service in March. The command was transferred to the Confederate government as "regulars." It served in or near Mobile throughout the war and was placed under the command of Generals Shoup, Higgins, and Page. Stationed at Fort Morgan and its dependencies, the battalion attained a high degree of discipline, in so much that the federal (Yankee) General Granger, pronounced it the most perfect body of either army. Detachments of it manned the heavy artillery at Forts Gaines and Powell, and rendered effective service. During the terrific bombardment of Fort Morgan, in August 1864, the battalion, "moved by no weak fears" handled the guns till they were all knocked out of position, losing 150 killed and wounded of about 500. More than 400 men were captured when Forts Gaines and Morgan fell, but a detachment continued to fight at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely. Those captured were sent to Elmira (Hell-mira), NY, where fully half died of smallpox. In March, 1865, a small number moved to Choctaw Bluff and were included in the surrender of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. Jack Adamson is shown on the 1870 Tallapoosa, AL as 28 years old in "Gold Branch BT" More About PINKNEY JACKSON ADAMSON: Burial: Pleasant Springs Presbyterian Church, Kemper Co., MS Military service: Co E, 1 Alabama, Artillery Batallion, CSA Marriage Notes for PINKNEY ADAMSON and MARTHA WOOD: Handwritten record: "This certifies that Mr. P.J.
