GEORGE Complied 2006, by Julia T. Cadenhead. 1249 Mapoles St. Crestview, FL 32536. Inquiries encouraged. The Montgomery County, Alabama 1850 Census lists the “Garge” family as Hugh L. age 32, farmer, born in GA. Mary A. age 21, born in N.C. and two children, Jadah A, age 4 born in AL and Louana, age 1, born in AL. We believe this is actually the George family. We next find the family in the 1860 Census of Pike County, AL, Western Division taken 4 Sept, 1860 which lists Hugh as a 46 year old farm laborer born in GA. Living with him as Mary A., age 36 born in North Carolina and five children: Lurainy age 12, William A. age 9, Mary age 6, Frances age 4, and James L. age 10 months. All children listed as being born in Alabama. Location is Pike Co. AL, Western Division. 4 September, Orion Post Office. This area is adjacent to Montgomery Co. AL. The Alabama State census of 1866 lists Hugh L George but not the names of each family member. It does provide age categories of members of the household at the time. Presently unable to document Hugh’s participation in the Civil War. The 1870 Census of the Montgomery Township 12 taken on 15 August 1870, Pinelevel post office, lists Mary A. age 42 born in AL. but Hugh is not listed. Children living in the household are: Rebecca, age 23 (same birth year of Louana/Louvinie); Albert, age 20 (William Albert); Mary, age 17 (Mary Angeline); James, age 10 (James Lafayette); Parmelia, age 10 (Parthenia Melvinie); Nellie, age 9; Lora, age 5 and Sims, age 1 (possibly, “twins” Edward and Zebulon). The next census where we find the Hugh George family is the 1880 Federal Census in Pike Co. AL, Darby’s. Here Hugh is listed as age 55, birthplace Alabama and occupation farmer. This census lists a “Lurina” as wife, age 50, keeping house. Perhaps Hugh had married again. But this woman is possibly his daughter, Louvinia/Louraney who, though she had children, never married. Children in the household are listed as: James age 21, Burnett age 18, Mille age 17, Lee age 13 Zeb age 11 and Edward age 11. The race of all is shown as “MU.” Living nearby, according to the 1880 census, is the Ivy Cadenhead family. Ivy’s son - 19 year old Green – marries Parthenia Melvinie GEORGE (believed to the the 17 yr old Mille a daughter in Hugh’s household) in May of 1881 in Pike County, AL. Confusion over Hugh’s wife, Mary Ann Catrett (Cartright). 1860 Federal Census shows her as age 36, born in N.C. Dykes Catrett believes she died May 20, 1893, buried in Pike Co., AL. Some say she was a Creek Indian. Others say Cherokee. She is listed as Mary Anne Catrett on her daughter, Parthenia Melvinie George Cadenhead’s Death Certificate. (Okaloosa Co. FL., 1933) In 1896 and 1900 we document Hugh L. George land transactions with his sons James L. and Zebulon GEORGE and son-in-law Green J. Cadenhead in Covington County, AL. Grave stones in the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Opp, Covington Co. AL show several GEORGE family members – among them is a ‘new’ headstone, “Hugh L GEORGE and Mary A” erected by descendants in 2000. Hugh’s wife’s maiden name has long been in contention – Catrett or Cartright. This lineage uses Catrett . The Mystery of Hugh L. GEORGE’s one brother Hugh’s ggranddaughter (via Zebulon GEORGE and son Halliard Dawson GEORGE) says that her father told her they were Dutch. “In my research I found where some Indians registered in the census as Black Dutch to escape being sent to reservations. I believe that was what happened with them and they later dropped the Black part. My dad and his brothers said they were Cherokee. Jeanette and I went to Opp years ago and interviewed my grandmother's half sister and she said that Zeb and Laura (M. Jackson) George were both full blooded Indians.” Hugh’s grandson (via James L. GEORGE) says his father told him they were of Portuguese descent. Specifically, that grandpa Hugh, his brother and their father migrated from islands of the coast of the Carolinas, possibly Cape Hatteras area and, from there, went to Georgia where the brother settled. And, Hugh went to Alabama. It is believed that Hugh’s brother had no children. There was no mention of what happened to Hugh’s father. Again, this story is not yet documented. (as told on 13 Sept 06). Most records list Hugh’s birth state as “Georgia” though this one account disputes that. Hugh’s birthdate remains consistent as ca 1814. However, the family tells the story that Hugh’s son, paid a visit to Hugh’s brother. Seems that when James Lafayette GEORGE was age 18 when decided he wanted to meet his uncle who was living in Georgia at the time. Hugh told his son, James, that he could go but he wouldn’t like it. James went anyway. He was there two days: seems his uncle was a tight wad, miser. At bedtime he unlocked the pantry and took out just enough food for the next day’s meal and locked the pantry back. The brother, whose first name he cannot remember, owned a vineyard and made wine. At the time he and his wife had no children. It is doubtful they ever did. James L. came back home to tell his father he was right. James didn’t visit his uncle any more. This was ca 1876. William Albert GEORGE The 1880 Alabama Census, Pike Co (Orion) lists William K GEORGE, age 29, born in AL. This is the oldest son of Hugh and Mary, William A George.
